Our Region

The Barossa Valley region is approximately 70km northeast of Adelaide and is one of Australia's oldest wine regions. Our winery is dedicated to producing award-winning Barossa Valley Shiraz, Cabernet, alongside unique Bordeaux-style blends.

The warm Mediterranean climate of the region promotes the production of very ripe grapes that were the linchpin of the early Australian fortified wine industry. As the Australian wine industry shifted towards red table wines in the late 20th century, the Barossa Valley gained favour due to its reputation for producing Shiraz.

In the 1970s and 1980s, boutique family labels emerged specialising in old vine Shiraz that began to capture international attention for the distinctive Barossa Shiraz style – a full-bodied red wine with rich chocolate and spice notes. This led to a Barossa renaissance that catapulted the region to the forefront of the Australian wine industry where it is today.

Many Shiraz vines in the Barossa Valley are decades old, and some, are over 150 years old. Other grape varieties grown in the Barossa include Grenache, Mataro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay and Semillon.

The Barossa Valley has a Mediterranean climate, but its transverse valleys and sloping hills create a wide range of micro-climates. Temperatures vary from warm on the valley floors to progressively cooler at higher altitudes on the hillsides and further east in the valley.

During the October to April growing season, the region receives about 1,710 heating degree days, with mean average temperatures during the crucial ripening month of January being around 21.4°C (70°F).

Rainfall during the growing season averages only around 160mm (6.3 inches), with average relative humidity around 39 per cent, which means irrigation is often necessary. Many of the old vine vineyards on the western side of the valley are an exception and are often dry-farmed without irrigation.
